FAQS

Is cold-pressed coconut oil good for cooking?

Yes, cold pressed coconut oil works well for everyday Indian cooking, especially South Indian and coastal dishes. It is made by pressing mature coconut or copra without chemical solvents, so it keeps its natural nutrients and aroma. It suits sautéing, tadka and light frying. Its smoke point is lower than mustard oil, so avoid overheating it.

Will cooking with coconut oil make my food taste like coconut?

Cold pressed coconut oil keeps a mild coconut aroma, which many people enjoy in curries, Pongal and stir-fries. Once cooked with spices, the taste is usually subtle. If you are new to it, start with dishes where a coconut note already belongs, or mix a small amount with another cooking oil.

Is coconut oil healthy for daily use?

Coconut oil is mostly saturated fat, so moderation matters. It can fit into a balanced diet when used in measured amounts alongside other oils. It is generally advised to limit saturated fat overall, so if you have high cholesterol or heart concerns, ask your doctor how much is right for you. Choosing a cold pressed, preservative-free oil is a good start.

Can I deep fry with cold pressed coconut oil?

It is better suited for light sautéing and medium-heat cooking. Cold pressed coconut oil has a smoke point of about 175 - 177°C, while for deep frying the oil needs to be heated to 180 - 200°C. Occasional light frying works if you keep the heat moderate, but for regular deep frying, choose cold pressed mustard oil which has a higher smoke point.

Why does coconut oil solidify and is it still good to use?

Yes, it is perfectly fine. Coconut oil is mostly saturated fat, so it turns solid below roughly 25°C, especially in winter. This is normal, not spoilage. To use it, place the bottle in warm water for a few minutes until it liquefies. Do not boil the oil or the bottle directly. Warming up the solidified coconut oil multiple times is safe and it is not the same as reusing oil used for frying which is not advised.
