In the winter season, cough syrups are our best buddies because they help us in conditions like throat irritation, infection, cough and sometimes even cold. Cough syrups help in managing cough and its related symptoms because these are formulated in such a way that they alleviate different types of cough. Cough can be broadly categorized as dry cough and productive cough (or wet cough, which is a cough that brings up mucus or phlegm).
Let’s talk a bit about Ayurvedic cough syrups
Ayurveda, or the ‘ancient Indian medical system’, is based on ancient writings that use natural and holistic practices to aid physical and mental health. It is considered one of the oldest medical systems in the world. It has been followed for over 5000 years. It works on the concept of balancing the three pillars of the body: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Since Ayurvedic cough syrups use these principles of ancient wisdom, they are made with pure herbs and natural ingredients. These cough syrups are also free from chemicals and are non-drowsy.
WHAT IS COUGH
Cough is categorised as one of the most common medical conditions accounting for millions of clinical visits per year. As per Ayurveda, cough is categorized as a separate disease by the name of Kasa Roga by various Acharyas. There is a detailed description of cough available in the textbooks of Ayurveda which guide us about various etiological factors that cause imbalance amongst the three Doshas (Vata, Pitta and Kapha) of the body, hence leading to Kasa Roga or cough.
CLASSIFICATION
Based on chronicity, cough can be further divided into three categories:
- If a person is suffering from a cough for less than three weeks, it is known as an acute cough.
- If a cough is present for three to eight weeks, it is known as a sub-acute cough.
- If a cough is present for more than eight weeks, it is known as a chronic cough.
CAUSES
The most common causes of cough are acute viral infection or upper respiratory infection which is also known as the common cold. Another common viral cause is known as acute bronchitis but bacterial infection is also a source in some cases. Besides these, there are some other common causes of cough like acute rhinosinusitis, pertussis, allergic rhinitis, asthma and pneumonia.
