A preliminary survey of medicinal plants of Mauritius was conducted during December 1996 to February 1997 under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) Programme of Govt. of India. In this preliminary study, the surveyor identified around 300 plants, and also gathered various information about their uses.

The information gathered during the survey was including ayurvedic plants found in these areas, possibility of propagation of the plants in the gardens, indigenous remedies and the traditional claims, guidelines for pharmaceutical assessment, product information for drug standardization, classification and preparation of drugs, manufacturing of drugs in the Pharmacies and Drugs and Cosmetics Act, etc.
